School re-opens at Waverley Heights Academy for the 2004 - 2005 school year and ex-convict, Jeremy Bowells, returns to school much to the trepidation of the WHA staff and student body. Everyone knows he murdered someone… but no one really knows when, why and how. Gossip is spreading like wildfire and by the end of Orientation Week, everyone has heard at least 25 different versions of how Jeremy killed Rosalie Hampton, a girl who attended Footscray Public High and whom no one really knows.
Meanwhile, Corrinne Wethington, Head of the PTA, owner of Aspendale Jets and mother of resident school playboy, Christian Rhys Wethington, has unwelcome surprises planned for WHA this year. To get everyone out of her way for a few days, she loans the school some private planes to take them to Disneyland for Orientation. However, the seeds she sows on the campus grounds are as far as you can get from the “Happy Kingdom”. Leader of the Children of Astarte - an underground religious cult involving some of California’s wealthiest and most powerful, the grounds of Waverley Heights Academy present not only the ideal location to perform a series of ancient rituals, but to recruit a new generation of members.
The elaborate rituals performed lead to a chain of events that results in the death of Angeline Kelley. Things get complicated when her body is found in the Junior Class President, Louisa Grayce’s cupboard. Scatterbrained Louisa, the most unlikely person in the school to have commited the murder, instantly becomes a prime suspect and she is suspended from school. The student body is thrown in a tizzy with no one knowing what to think. Some assume Louisa must have done it, but a large chunk of students think it’s the work of Jeremy Bowells. Things spin out of control as the police soon begin to suspect gang activity instead, and starts investigating the WKC - a popular, fraternity-like crew of High School Football jocks consisting of boys from both Waverley Heights Academy and Waverley Heights High School.
To add further complications to the matter… the ancient ritual didn’t quite go as planned. A tiny mistake was made and certain energies were released into the school grounds. Supernatural phenomena begins to take place soon after, getting progressively worse and more violent. Those who encounter them and survive to tell the tale are disbelieved and laughed at. However, when the violence can no longer be denied and hushed up by the school’s authorities, fingers begin to point at Jeremy once more. With Louisa still under suspension, there can be no other explanation.
Louisa’s friends - Natalie Lix, Marie Hanley, Cassie Peregrin, Tristan McRae and Cameron Steele - form a Scooby Gang to embark on a sleuth mission to clear Louisa’s name.
Meanwhile, Trixie Croft, the famous young actress and star of the popular teen TV drama, “Bondy Beach”, takes a break from her acting career to attend regular High School. She enrolls at Waverley Heights Academy, a boarding school, to get away from the paparazzi. As Louisa’s old space in the dorms is vacant, the school allocates Trixie to the girl’s old room, which also houses Natalie, Cassie and Marie. The actress arrives to find out that a dead body had been found there just a week ago.
Because of Trixie’s presence at WHA, a cloud of reporters and paparazzi descends upon the school despite being forbidden from campus grounds. Soon, the school finds it harder and harder to conceal the “accidents” happening on campus from the media and press - especially when Trixie, convinced her new friends are telling the truth, decides to “leak” certain information to the eager reporters.
With students taking things into their own hands, spooky events lead Elaine Reilly, Theodore Chester and Faye De Lise into forming a second investigation team (unofficially nicknamed ‘The Justice League’), while the Keller cousins (Savannah Keller, Satine O’Hara, Gayle Keller and Gabriel Keller) make Ghostbusters of themselves to document the hauntings for a documentary to be aired on Savannah’s TV station. The Ghostbusters and The Justice League are linked to the Scoobies by one resident techno-whizz, Scarlett Stratford. As they inch closer towards uncovering the truth about Angeline’s murderer and the source of the paranormal activity, two of their lives are put in utmost danger. The arrival of a pair of European Priests specializing in exorcism throws things into greater chaos and Elaine forms an unexpected partnership with one holy man.
While all this is happening, Corrinne Wethington and her growing cult have problems of their own. Realizing they have accidentally invoked certain unexpected energies and phenomena during their ritual, they race against time to undo their mistake before the school and press catch on to their underground shenanigans and their involvement with the murder. However, they have one problem… they have no idea how.
As the authorities and several students close in on the truth, Corrinne hires a brother-and-sister assassin team, Ava and Christopher Fontaine, to eliminate those in her way and protect the cult’s secret. Many who come close to uncovering certain mysteries start dropping dead.
Life goes on in the meantime for the rest of WHA.
The Drama Club attempts to pull together a production of the controversial musical, RENT, which they must fund on their own due to school disapproval of the taboo themes involved. WeTV becomes the most haunted television station in the history of campus TV. Intense animosity between Ashlea Kensington, the reigning Social Queen, and Autumn Blakenship, the goody-two-shoes Prep Extraordinaire, spells R-I-V-A-L-R-Y between the Cheerleaders and the Dance Team, which the two girls respectively Captain. However, the Cheerleaders and Dancers aren’t the only ones at war. Having to share the same office space in the News Room has sparked off animosity between the Waverley Heat Newspaper staff and the Yearbook staff. Meanwhile, certain scandals shake the Staffroom at the Academy when several romances bloom, the least welcome of which involves the Head of Discipline’s ex-husband and the PE teacher. Even more shocking is the love affair between the Vice Principal, Damien LeBlanc, and a student, Faye De Lise. While kept under wraps, this relationship produces unexpected results that will shape the plot of the next school year.
